Greystead Old Church

Reviews

Beautifully converted church, mixing the splendour of the past and the comfort of the modern. The church was spotlessly clean and well equipped with quality products and we wanted for nothing.

  • Mr Mick Healey - July 2023

This is a gorgeous renovation of a beautiful old church set in a lovely landscape. The accommodation suited us perfectly - six adults, two children and three golden retrievers. The weather wasn't great but there is plenty of space for family activities when the rain closes in! The area offers a lot of activities for children, lots of short/long walks with or without dogs in a beautiful landscape, much history and many pretty villages/small towns. We loved it.

Greystead Old Church has to be one of the best holiday homes we have stayed in. Our family found it not only spacious and well designed but also a most relaxing and comfortable environment in what is a superb conversion of this most splendid Church. Well equipped with every home comfort and the space for all ages of the family to relax and enjoy this most unique setting. Thoroughly recommended as a unique stay.

  • Mrs Leticia Wiemer - March 2023

Greystead Old Church has been done beautifully! The owners have kept the beauty of the old church features and added all comfort of modern life. The bedrooms are comfortable and aesthetically pleasing, the living room is the best reading spot one could possibly dream of, the kitchen…just superb, every item you need is there, thoughtfully designed, a dream kitchen! Our family of 5, with 3 young children and 2 dogs have had a sublime time in Northumberland and cannot wait to visit the Greystead Old Church in the near future, when the tower will be open and amazing views of rolling countryside will be at the doorsteps!

  • Mrs Kellie Daniels - January 2023

Amazing space, incredible part of the world!! We will absolutely be visiting again soon. Thank you!

  • Mrs Rosie Gregson - December 2022

Amazing we think it's the best place we have ever stayed. The church is beautiful and area stunning. It can't be faulted.

  • Ms Karen Callingham - November 2022

This is a fabulous spacious property, beautifully converted, with everything you need. We have been with friends three times now and loved it every time. The surrounding area is stunning with lots of lovely walks to enjoy either around Kielder Water or across the moors.

  • Mr Steve Welton - September 2022

  • Mrs Marijke Stiggelbout V D Berg - September 2022

We have had a great time and the owner gave us a very very warm welcome. The place was excellent, the beds, the furniture, the kitchen equipment, it was all top!

  • Mrs Tina Howells - August 2022

Beautiful property in a beautiful area. The property was full of character and maintained its original peaceful qualities. Everything was catered for and the owners were nearby, friendly and not intrusive. Would love to come again.

  • Mr Ian Drever - July 2022

Great place to stay. Particularly as we have a few ancestors in the graveyard and my Great Uncle was the Rector just over a hundred years ago. We had also left a few things behind, which were sent on to us. Thanks again

  • Mrs Alison Neilson - June 2022

A very unique holiday home. An exquisitely renovated old church keeping original features. Extremely dog friendly, our doggy companions enjoyed the use of the outdoor space.

  • Mr Philip Curran - March 2022

Great property, beautiful clean and well appointed. The surrounding area is stunning. We had a great time and would highly recommend to others.

  • Mrs Taylor - March 2022

Absolutely fantastic place to stay. The kitchen and entertaining area is amazing (bottle of wine and a gorgeous lemon cake was a nice touch) and the sofas downstairs are so comfortable. The stained glass window is stunning and the whole place is just fabulous - it’s not often you get somewhere as special as this that is dog friendly. We will definitely be back

  • Mrs Thompson - May 2022

All enjoyed stay in Greystead church and sad to leave. Particularly impressed by size and furnishing of kitchen area. A good ‘together ‘space. The owner was very helpful. The churchyard was lovely and we often walked in it - also had barbecues in our own field .

  • Mr Burns - October 2021

The old church is a lovely place to stay. It as been thoughtfully and carefully restored to provide an ideal place to stay. It is set within a lovely part of Northumbria with Kielder Forest just a 10 minutes drive away. There are numerous walks and places to visit in this area and the Old Church is a great base to explore from. Anne (the owner) is always happy to answer any queries that you might have and a wealth of knowledge about the local area. There is a separate enclosed garden which is safe for pets and young children and a ‘dark skies’ base for star gazing. This is by far the best rental property that I (and the family) have stayed in and I highly recommend it.

  • Mrs Hackett - November 2021

We had a lovely stay here. Upon our arrival a tea tray and lemon drizzle cake greeted us which was very much appreciated after a long journey. The church was exceptionally clean and fully equipped for self catering. Situated on the edge of Northumberland National park it was great for the dogs and we enjoyed short trips in to hexham, Otterburn and I would suggest a trip to vindalonda too followed by a gorgeous meal at the Pheasant Inn. Anne was a great host and nothing was too much trouble. We would highly recommend staying here as we were sad to leave

  • Mr Price - January 2020

We have just returned from having a absolutely fantastic week at Greystead Church Bill and Ann are absolutely fantastic hosts and nothing is too much trouble for them the conversion of the church has been done to the highest quality The stain glass window in the lounge is truly amazing it’s a warm clean and welcoming place I can’t thank Bill and Ann enough for sharing this fantastic place with us and our two dogs Barney and Alfie they had the time of their life running up and down the corridor and walking in Kielder Forest which is just a short ride away I would highly recommend this converted church to anyone who just wants to drop out of the rat race and recharge their batteries many thanks.

  • Mrs Poole - February 2020

We so much room in the church to play games , entertain the children and never at any point felt over crowded . It was warm in the day and cosy at night . We had snow and our grandsons loved the experience of snow ball fighting. outside in the gardens they also loved the experience of staying in a converted church.

  • Mrs Lloyd - June 2021

We’ve had an absolutely fabulous week. We adored the Old Church, Anne and Bill have done a really beautiful sympathetic restoration job. The Church is really well equipped, with plenty of space and every care had been made to make us feel COVID safe. Anne is delightful and was so helpful with our annoying deliveries. We packed masses into the week and the weather was so kind. Bamburgh, Alnwick Gardens, walked a chunk of Hadrian’s Wall, cycled Kielder water twice, once on eBikes just to try them out - such fun and we’ll never be rude about them again! Our son and his girlfriend even went to Edinburgh. Plus several lovely walks. Can highly recommend The Lounge on the Green at Houghton for a special evening out. The Pheasant was excellent, and Bouchon in Hexham is a lovely French bistro. Northumberland is a beautiful part of the country and without Covid restrictions I doubt we would have holidayed in the UK. I’m so pleased we did!

  • Mrs Partridge - November 2018

Greystead is a beautiful place to stay, the renovations have been done really well and to a very high standard. It had everything we needed and was lovely and warm. Bill and Anne were very welcoming and very helpful, we really enjoyed our stay.

  • Mr Clarke - October 2018

The Property was an amazing conversion and lived up to every expectation. It was to a great standard and was liked by us all. Plenty of room and warm and cosy. The owners of the property could not be more helpful. We all said we would love to stay again sometime.

  • Mrs Petchey - September 2018

This beautiful old church has been given a new lease of life in the 21st century. The renovation has been done very sympathetically, retaining so many features of the original. This is a once in a lifetime find. I've never been anywhere like it.

  • Mrs Watson - July 2018

A stunning property, set in a lovely part of Northumberland. A lemon drizzle cake, a bottle of wine, teas, coffee and milk in the fridge; a lovely welcome gift awaited us. All of our family (aged 15 to 84 years old) loved this converted church with places to gather as a family and also quiet corners to chill.

  • Mrs Deery - April 2018

Unique property which has been converted to the highest standard. Great location for walkers or bikers and a comfortable base to come back to. Well equipped with everything you might need for a great holiday. We loved the fact that all the church features had been retained making this a special place. Well worth booking.

  • Miss M McGarg - March 2018

Had a fantastic holiday in the Church. It is amazing!! Was recommended by a friend and knew it would be lovely, but renovation is outstanding. Church so comfortable and warm, facilities are amazing. Kitchen is out of this world. Felt like Mary Berry! Rooms are done to an exceptional standard. Has to be seen to be believed. What an experience.

  • MRBA2015 - October 2017

This place is absolutely stunning. Before you get inside the church is an amazing building but once inside it is just so impressive. Accommodation for eight people and still plenty of room so you are not falling over each other. It can be cold up here but the heating system is first class, we even had to turn down the thermostat. Ideally situated for various local attractions and great country walks. I am more than happy to give Greystead Church my highest recommendation and I would love to go back.

  • Chris W - January 2017

You may think holidaying in an old church is odd. Within a few minutes of walking in you are so impressed with the conversion you forget it is an old church and just enjoy the space.

Well equipped and very good heating system.

  • Mrs Thurlbeck - February 2017

What an amazing property, finished and furnished to a very high standard. The features of the Church were used effectively and with good taste. A warm and comfortable stay, highly recommended.

  • Mrs Brockley, December 2016

Stunning, breathtaking, amazing place with so much character and warmth considering the age of the property - perfect in every way.

  • Mrs Brigham, December 2016

A truly amazing conversion of a beautiful Old Church. The stained glass windows were stunning, as were the views. Attention to detail was very high and many original features were beautifully preserved for us all to see. The whole place just oozed history and it was fascinating to see the photographs in the hall showing various stages of its conversion. The property was very clean and well equipped and it was lovely to have quality bedding and towels. It was extremely spacious and designed to be very sociable for a group of family or friends. The owners were very friendly and helpful and made us feel very welcome. I would certainly recommend this property.

  • Mrs Rutherford, November 2016

Fantastic conversion of Greystead Church to amazing holiday accommodation. The owners were super, the accommodation was beautiful and very luxurious. Would highly recommend a visit!!

  • Mr Warburton, October 2016

What an amazing place to stay! It is the most beautiful building and renovation, and the owners make it so special. Do some research too, the history of the place is fascinating and makes it even more special!

  • Anne2578 - September 2016

Nothing really to say except, stunning and faultless accommodation.

The conversion is great and very tasteful, felt very comfortable. The house is equipped with everything one needs for a holiday. Thank you to the owners.

  • Mr Mackenzie, July 2016

Superb. Fabulous accommodation. Immaculate. Thank you. We will be back...

  • Mr Macmillan, February 2016

Easily the best place that we have stayed in. Beautifully furnished and equipped to a very high spec. Very friendly owners (Anne and Bill) who are available if needed but everything is that well thought out and organised that we didn't need to contact them. We met the owners while walking the dogs and they were very friendly indeed.

  • Williams Family, New Mills, Derbyshire, April 2014

This is the most beautiful rental-everything is top rate from the towels to the crockery (all John Lewis!). The bathrooms are all beautiful decorated and the owners have thought of everything - sewing kits, spare bulbs, etc. the starter kit for the wood-burner kept us going all week in February!! There are many lovely walks from the doorstep and many more if you drive a little distance first. ..... If you're looking for a special place to stay...this is your place! There is enough space for families to stay together without living in each other's pockets! ....Thoroughly recommend staying here. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.”

  • A Trip Advisor Member, Lancaster, May 2014

We booked this cottage as a "surprise" get- together.. and what a surprise we got. This immaculate church conversion was in an idyllic setting and very near the lovely town of Bellingham and the Kielder National Park and facilities. We had an excellent time. The equipment was excellent and VERY modern, so much so that we old folk couldn't quite understand why the rings didn't heat up on the hob... we'd never come across the high spec induction hobs before!. We went as a group of 8 and there was more than enough room. There are different places within the living area for some people to watch TV, some to listen to the radio and others to watch a DVD. As a "Brucey-bonus" we could also take the dogs. Well worth booking - highly recommended.

  • Jan G, Worthing, United Kingdom, May 2014

This was a really quality experience. From the outside, this looks exactly like the country church it ever was (built in 1817) but once inside it is impossible not to be totally in awe of the magnificent conversion that has been undertaken. Bedrooms, (3 of the 4 are en suite) are now situated where once there were pews. At the altar there are steps up to the mezzanine floor where the main (huge) living space has been constructed, over the top of the aisle and the bedrooms. Everything is top quality here, and the view of the stained glass window from above is just magnificent.

Most self-catering properties are a bit of a disappointment compared to the photographs on the website (at least in my experience), but you certainly couldn't say that about Greystead Old Church. This is an exceptionally good conversion of a wonderful Gothic church, and although the property still has a churchy feel, it has been brought bang up to date with hotel-quality bathrooms, antique furniture, and a fabulously well equipped kitchen. All the furnishings are first class, with lovely white linen and fluffy towels.

  • Mr Weaver, Leeds, July 2014

Best self catering accommodation we have stayed in. Fantastic conversion.

  • Mr Steward Norwich, June 2014

This property is indisputably first class. Thoughtfully and beautifully restored with high quality fittings and furniture and a stunning mezzanine with a well equipped kitchen and dining area. This was absolutely ideal for our party. We spent our time walking, golfing, and visiting National Trust properties. Each evening we congregated for supper at this wonderful property. The owners were charming and helpful.

  • Mrs Williams, High Peak, February 2014

This property is outstanding, I can't think of anything that would improve the accommodation at all.
